Dr Isaiah Gwitira is a holder of DPhil in Geospatial Health from the University of Zimbabwe. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe.
Dr Gwitira's main focus areas are in the application of Geospatial Technology and Spatial Science. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Geography Geospatial Sciences and Earth Observation where he is the lead person for the Geospatial Health research cluster. Dr Gwitira is a well-trained Spatial Scientist who has worked in various projects where Geographic Information Science and Earth Observation were applied to understand Environmental issues both regionally and locally. Gwitira has worked with various Ministries and government departments including the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry on Modelling climate change and conducting climate change vulnerability assessments. His key skills are in mapping geographic phenomena using GIS and remote sensing, climate change vulnerability, geospatial modelling of human impacts on the environment. He also actively participated in the mapping of Zimbabwe’s wetlands under the Environmental Management Agency and ZINGSA. Gwitra works closely with other researchers from the University of Zimbabwe's Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Veterinary Sciences in research of the spatial distribution of human and animal diseases.
From 2013 to 2017 Dr Gwitira was part of a team of experts from the University of Zimbabwe who carried out capacity building on the use GIS and Earth Observation. This programme sought to understand droughts in the SADC region under the Monitoring of Environment for Security Project of the African Union and was supported by the European Union. In 2019 he was part of a team commissioned by the Government of Zimbabwe work on a project to revise the Agroecological regions of Zimbabwe using geospatial techniques. He is also a member of the Environmental Health Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe (EHPCZ).
